I was lucky enough to be chosen to take part and produce a professional line Photo-book with the guys at Saal Digital .
I chose the 30 page, 40 x 30 leather/ linen cover with a matte finish. There was an option to add a gift box too which looked really nice but chose to just grab the book. The customizability ( pretty sure it’s a word ) of the layout , using the Saal design Software is the best I have ever used, leaving you with complete control of how your book will look.
The Design
I chose a simple design that showcased my images with a striking font to accompany them. I would have had a narrative alongside but you will notice reading this review that the written word is not one of my strong points. There is an infinite amount of designs and features that will enhance the look of any project, from simple drop shadows, frame masks and backdrops to a full on Photoshop style layering edit. It is such an immersive program I could have easily run away with myself and created an extravaganza. There is even scope on the app to colour adjust the actual images so you really are only limited by your own imagination.
The text comes in a variety of fonts, colours, sizes etc and placement again it down to individual preference.
Quality
The say in life that you get what you pay for and at £150 ish for a 30 page book it may seem quite a lot but when you want to showcase your work to potential clients or for any job opportunity’s the professionalism just oozes out and could be the difference between you and the next guy. The leather bound book screams class and the paper is super thick and weighty, there is just a sense of pure quality throughout the whole book.
The real bones of the matter for me as a photographer is how the images look on the page, many times I have had prints come back to me that look faded or washed out and just lack the punch that grabs the viewers attention and drags them right in.
I used a wide range of images that had different lighting settings to see how the prints would turned out and was really very happy with the outcome
I can honestly say the colours and finish are outstanding.
In Conclusion
From the moment I hit “add to cart” on the design app, I waited, anxiously hoping for this product to arrive and for it to be as good, or even close to some of the other reviews I had read about Saal’s books.
From the moment I slid it out of the protective sleeve I could immediately feel and smell the craftsmanship. The heavy duty paper with the impeccable printing bound together in a stunning white ( other clours and styles are available ) leather sleeve just work so well.
